R.E

At Flanderwell, our children will experience a high quality Religious Education that we hope will inspire and excite them throughout their primary education. We aim to shape our children to develop a better understanding of themselves, the people around them and the world in which they live through developing their own thinking and their understanding of Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism and Islam as a contribution to their understanding of the world and their own experience within it.

Our Curriculum

We follow the Discovery RE scheme of work, which has numerous benefits for our pupils:

  • Makes RE a learning experience to look forward to
  • Provides a safe enquiry space
  • Encourages deep questioning
  • Enhances critical thinking and evaluation skills
  • Supports spiritual development
  • Equips them to celebrate diversity

The way in which Discovery RE is structured, means that it provides knowledge and skills development, with application of these to the children’s lives within and beyond school. In addition, the scheme of work:

  • Sets out a progressive and sequential programme evidenced by the developmental learning intentions written into all the materials.
  • Has a wide range of child-centred activities that ensure the learning is enjoyable for pupils and teachers alike.
  • Has its own assessment system, descriptors and exemplifications, so teachers can see the expected standard of learning that pupils should attain at the end of each unit of work, each year and each Key Stage.
  • Uses an assessment system aimed at judging pupil knowledge, personal resonance and critical thinking skills within the RE unit being taught.

*The inbuilt assessment processes within each scheme, allows evidence of impact to be easily captured and recorded.

See at the bottom of this page the programme of study for each year group during the academic year 2023-2024

The scheme that we follow within our school, is in line with the National Curriculum across all subjects. The Discovery RE Programme fully meets Ofsted and DfE guidance requirements for it is a robust and fully mapped programme that meets pupil needs.

Furthermore, Discovery RE will continue to adapt to changing needs of pupils and schools, and in response to any further guidance issued.

Aims

Our aims are to ensure that all pupils:

  • Building on the statutory requirements, it is recommended that there should be a wide ranging study of religion and belief across the key stages as a whole.
  • Encourages pupils to explore their own beliefs (whether they are religious or non-religious), in the light of what they learn, as they examine issues of religious belief and faith and how these impact on personal, institutional and social ethics; and to express their responses.
  • Enables pupils to build their sense of identity and belonging, which helps them flourish within their communities and as citizens in a diverse society
  • Teaches pupils to develop respect for others, including people with different faiths and beliefs, and helps to challenge prejudice

Prompts pupils to consider their responsibilities to themselves and to others, and to explore how they might contribute to their communities and to wider society. It encourages empathy, generosity and compassion.

Knowledge

In order to achieve the above aims, children will be taught a range of disciplinary knowledge:

  • Reflect and relate their learning in RE to their own experience.
  • Provoke challenging questions about the meaning and purpose of life, beliefs, the self, issues of right and wrong, and what it means to be human.
  • Some people do not hold religious beliefs and have their own philosophical perspectives, and subject matter should facilitate integration and promotion of shared values.
  • A variety of religious traditions and worldviews, across the key stages as a whole, making appropriate links with other parts of the curriculum and its cross-curricular dimensions.
  • Studies that consider the balance of religion within:
    - The school community
    - The community within which the school is located
    - The UK community
    - The global community.
