Year6 Spring 1 Curriculum Overview

In English, we will continue to use our Pathways to Write SOW and we will be using some short film units from Literacy Shed+ to build up our independent writing portfolios.

We will focus on:

Distinguishing between the language of speech and writing and using dialogue to advance action and portray characters

Recognising vocabulary and structures for formal speech and writing, including subjunctive forms

Using passive verbs

Using semi-colons to mark boundaries between independent clauses

Using figurative language elements in our writing to create better ‘Show’ not ‘Tell’ sentences

In our Maths lessons, we will continue to develop our skills, logic and reasoning in the following areas:

  • Fractions/ Decimals/ Percentages
  • Ratio
  • Algebra

D&T: Theme: sewing

We will be designing, making and evaluating an Easter inspired gift, which is made using various materials and fabric of different shapes. The gift must be suitable to give to a family member or close friend. Your gift must combine different shapes that are joined using a variety of techniques. It will need to be special and include themes related to Easter, which incorporates different fabric shapes, materials and other embellishments. Our final product will need to be well presented and be able to be on display in our homes.

Geography:

  • Geographical Skills –  Create complex keys. Explain how types of maps give different perspectives. British Empire map of countries
  • Academic Skills –  Use age related vocabulary in their speech and writing. Create age related tables, graphs and charts, maps and plans. Line graph of countries acquired by the British Empire
  • Human and Physical Geography –  Be able to describe and understand key aspects of human geography including trade links and the distribution of natural resources including energy, food, minerals and water.

History: The Shang Dynasty

Understands and can explain, using evidence the reasons why people, events and developments are significant using sources as evidence.  Sees consequences in terms of immediate and longer-term effects and can see that people were affected differently.
