Homework
Below are some of the key skills that you can work on to support your child throughout Year 2. We will send home weekly homework each Friday in your child’s homework bag. Please return homework in this bag each Wednesday to show their success and to earn Dojo points.
Reading regularly will develop a love of books and your child’s skills as a reader. We recommend reading at least three times each week. Each day you indicate in their diary that your child has read, this means they race along our Reading Racetrack. Three or more days reading per week earn Dojo Points. Every read your child does will count towards their own reading race track. Every child has a special rocket and their aim is to reach 250+ reads, which is the Governors’ Award by the end of the school year. 50 reads will earn them a Bronze Award, 100 reads will earn them a Silver Award and 200 reads will earn them a Gold Award.
Maths homework will be sent home every week. This will often practise a skill that has been taught previously. On-line games will also be added to your child’s account on TTRockstars throughout the year. Homework earns Dojo Points. All personal logins have been shared, but are also noted in the front of the reading diary. The Whiterose 1-Minute Maths app also provides free access to online games to practise maths fluency skills.
Spelling zappers will be given to each child. This has nine spellings for your child to learn. The words on this are individual to your child and for them to practise reading and spelling at home and in school. There will be no spelling ‘test’, but children will be given new words when they are able to spell the bookmark words in their sentence writing and we have seen them spell the word correctly five times. Each complete zapper earns Dojo points.
RWI spelling logs share the spelling rule that we are focusing upon each week in class. The log also includes the short list of words for your child to practise spelling at home each week. Please return the log to school each day for use in class.
Recall facts are an important skill to keep practising throughout Year 2. It is important that children know their number bonds fluently to 10 and 20. By the end of the year, children also need to know their 2, 5 and 10 times tables facts. This includes multiplication and division facts. Bronze, silver and gold awards are earned as children learn each set of times tables. Each award also earns Dojo points. Please use the link to see the Recall Facts to focus upon each half-term during Year 2 https://flanderwell.co.uk/maths-recall-facts/
Homework club is held each week for children who have not had the opportunity to complete and hand in Maths homework or have not read at least twice at home.
PE
Our PE days are Monday and Thursday. Children need to bring their PE kit bag to school on these days. Kit bags ca be brought on Monday and left on your child’s peg until Thursday if you prefer for ease. Please be aware that the majority of PE lessons take place outdoors, so children need to have clothing suitable for the weather and trainers or pumps. For health and safety reasons they should have long hair tied and earrings removed. Correct kit earns Dojo Points.
The kit should include:
T-shirt with sweatshirt or zipped jacket
Jogging trousers, leggings or shorts
Trainers or sturdy pumps.
Sunhat on sunny days and jacket on cold days
