Year 4S

Welcome to Y4S

Teacher: Mrs Slater

Teaching Assistant: Mr Modest

Welcome back to school and the start of the academic year 2020!

Our topic this term is ‘Ancient Egypt’

Throughout this half term, we will be looking at a variety of skills linked to place value, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and problem solving.  As always, we will be following the abacus scheme of work to ensure skills coverage, continuity and focusing on the recovery curriculum.

We begin our literacy learning this year with some transition work and activities to get to know each other.

The topic ‘Ancient Egypt’ provides plenty of opportunities for reading and writing. We are very excited to be looking at the literacy hook ‘Tadeo Jones’ from Literacy Shed. This exciting topic hopes to inspire amazing writing, including setting descriptions and story mapping.

As well as our Ancient Egypt topic we will have a specific SPaG focus throughout ensuring continuity of spelling and grammar rules. The children will also begin to follow the Read Write Inc. spelling programme.

The children will continue to use computers, iPads and the interactive whiteboard for a range of cross-curricular learning, including:

Digital art

Computer coding

As Scientists, we will be learning about human nutrition, which links beautifully with Ancient Egypt and the mummification process. This topic will focus on digestion and teeth.

Our very own TA Mr Modest will be taking the children for PE. He’s our new PE Teacher.

P.E days are: Wednesday and Thursday.

Guidance for PE KIT for Autumn term:

*For the first half term, children should arrive in their full outdoor P.E kits on P.E days

to avoid the need to change into kit in smaller spaces and any mix-up wth clothing.

Kit should include jogging/tracksuit bottoms, a warm sweater/hooded top, a pair of trainers and a water-proof. P.E shorts and a t-shirt may be worn under the joggers/tracksuit bottoms /sweater on warmer days. All kit should be suitable for purpose. Please avoid football strips. Children will use the outdoors for their P.E lessons this half term.

Ways to help your child:

ü    By talking about the topics and finding out any information from books, computers, internet, libraries etc. Please encourage the children to bring any useful information into school which could be displayed on our home learning wall.

ü    By discussing any Numeracy homework with your child and helping/encouraging them to complete any Homework tasks. Maths homework is given out on Fridays, to be returned to school and placed in the homework box by Wednesday.

ü    By helping them to learn thoroughly their times tables. This year children will partake in REFLEX Maths, which aims to help support children to learn their times tables (x2 to x12) with quick recall and fluency.

ü    By chatting with them about work covered in the Literacy lesson.

ü    By helping them to learn thoroughly any spellings brought home. It is important to learn to spell the individual word first, and then practise spelling it in a sentence too.  When spellings are given out on Wednesday they will be tested on the following Monday.

ü    By encouraging them to read for at least 10 minutes a day (more if they are enjoying the story or information in the book). Also take time to talk about the characters and events as well as sharing thoughts about what has happened or what might happen next.

ü  Book bag and diary– Bringing it to school every day.

ü  Colour-banded book – Can be changed by parents with children before or after school any day, choosing from colour baskets.

ü  Reading Diary-To be brought in every day for one to one reading.

ü  Readings will be counted on a Wednesday so please ensure you hand the Reading diary in to be counted and points will be collected for our Reading Race Track.

ü  Scheme book (in the plastic bag)-To be handed on Wednesdays to be changed and returned home the same day.

ü  Ensuring that they come to school to work hard and succeed.

ü  Keep up to date with letters regarding any school updates.

ü  Celebrate their achievements!

I look forward to working with you and your children.

Getting in touch:

  • Send a message on Class Dojo
  • Phone and leave a message and I will get back to you as soon as I can.

Thank you, as always, for your support. It means a lot to your child, to me, our class, and the school. Together we can reach for the stars and be the best learners and people we can be!

Thank you

Mrs Slater
