Year 1E

year 1

Class Teacher: Miss Edley     Teaching Assistant: Mrs. Burton

Our Topic this Half Term is…

Who’s afraid of the dark?

Our theme will be based on the story ‘Orion and the Dark’.  We will discuss the character’s feelings and behaviour and explore them using drama techniques.  This will help us create empathy for the story character, Orion, and we will relate his experiences to our own.  We will use poetry to express our own feelings.  We will explore the dark through Art and study L.S.Lowry’s use of colour.  We will learn about the importance of coal miners in the past in our local area, following our visit to National Mining Museum.  As Scientists, we will learn about materials and their properties, as well as investigating transarency.  In Computing we will develop our animation skills, combined with our imagination, using ‘Puppet Pals’ to create short animated stories.

Reading regularly will develop a love of books and your child’s skills as a reader.  We recommend reading at least 3 times each week.  Each day you indicate in their diary that your child has read, this means they race along our Reading Racetrack. 3 or more reads earn Team Points.

Weekly Maths homework will be sent home every Friday to be handed in on Wednesday.  This will often practise a skill that has been taught throughout the week.  On-line games will also be added to your child’s page on Homework earns Team Points.

A spelling bookmark will be sent home.  The words on this are for your child to practise reading and spelling at home and in school.  There will be no spelling ‘test’, but children will be given new words when they are able to spell the bookmark words in their sentence writing.

Number facts are an important skill to keep practising throughout Year 1.  Our end of year target is for most children to be able to recall addition and subtraction facts for numbers upto 20 (such as 7+3=10, 10-3=7, 1+4=5, 5-4=1, 16+2=18).

Homework club is held every Thursday for children who have not had the opportunity to complete and hand in Maths homework or have not read at least twice at home.

Our PE days are Monday and Friday.  Children need a change of clothes to participate, including t-shirt and shorts, as well as trainers for outdoor PE during the Summer term.  Children with pierced ears need to have  earrings removed on PE days or plasters/micropore tape can be provided in their kit bag to cover earrings. Correct kit earns Team Points.
