Year 1B

year 1

Teacher: Mrs. Brock       Teaching Assistant: Mrs. Horton

SUMMER PE KIT: Please remember to provide full kit including trainers or pumps every Monday and Friday.

Our Topic this Half Term is…

Dead or alive?

Our animal theme will be based on the story ‘Farmer Duck’ as well as a range of rhymes and poems.  We hope this will inspire our own poetry writing and letter writing.  Based on fact files such as ‘Top Trumps’ we will create our own animal fact files, following our up close encounter with animals at the Tropical Butterfly House.  In Art our observation and imagination will combine to sculpt three-dimensional creatures.  We will learn about animal homes around the World and locate some of these on a map.  As Scientists, we will classify living and non-living things.  We will sort and classify creatures according to their features and will also learn to distinguish between animal groups such as mammals, reptiles and birds.

Reading regularly will develop a love of books and your child’s skills as a reader.  We recommend reading at least 3 times each week.  Each day you indicate in their diary that your child has read, this means they race along our Reading Racetrack (as staff count home reads every Wednesday). 3 or more reads earn Team Points.

Weekly Maths homework will be sent home every Friday to be handed in on Wednesday.  This will often practise a skill that has been taught throughout the week.  On-line games will also be added to your child’s page on Homework earns Team Points.

A spelling bookmark will be sent home.  The words on this are for your child to practise reading and spelling at home and in school.  There will be no spelling ‘test’, but children will be given new words when they are able to spell the bookmark words in their sentence writing.

Number facts are an important skill to keep practising throughout Year 1.  Our end of year target is for most children to be able to recall addition and subtraction facts for numbers upto 20 (such as 7+3=10, 10-3=7, 1+4=5, 5-4=1, 16+2=18).

Homework club is held every Thursday for children who have not had the opportunity to complete and hand in Maths homework or have not read at least twice at home.

Our PE days are Monday and Friday.  Children need a change of clothes to participate, including t-shirt and shorts, as well as trainers for outdoor PE during the Summer term.  Children with pierced ears need to have  earrings removed on PE days or plasters/micropore tape can be provided in their kit bag to cover earrings. Correct kit earns Team Points.
