  • Ensure we have up to date contact details for each family member so we can keep in touch, contact someone in an emergency and share important messages via school text. Please contact the school office to share any changes.
  • Children should bring a water bottle to school everyday. There are water dispensers in school to refill them if necessary.
  • Book bags need to be brought to school everyday. Book bags should contain a reading diary and reading book. Books are precious, please do not transport water bottles in book bags to limit any damages!
  • Please can all items of clothing be labelled with your child’s name.
Class Themes and Topics

In Foundation Stage, all learners experience a broad, balanced and varied curriculum, which is relevant to their stage of development. Thoughtfully planned, child-centered topics change from half term to half term, and are used as a vehicle to teach the whole EYFS curriculum. This year, our topics include:

Autumn 1 – Marvelous Me

Autumn 2 – Farms and Celebrations

Spring 1 –  Dinosaur, ROAR!

Spring 2 – Down in the Jungle

Summer 1 – The Pirates are Coming!

Summer 2 – ‘Are we nearly there yet?’

The following link shows how we will teach each area of the early years curriculum through our topics:

FS2 LONG TERM PLANNING 23.24

Phonics-Early Reading
We teach phonics everyday using the Read Write Inc scheme created by Ruth Miskin. In phonics lessons, children are taught to read letters by their sound and write letters using a phrase. We have a very helpful soft toy called Fred the Frog who supports our phonics lessons. Fred the Frog talks in sounds, and chilren have to repeat the sounds he says and blend them together to reveal a word e.g. d-o-g = dog!
By the end of the reception year, children are expected to know all single letter sounds and at least 10 ‘special friend’ sounds (two letters that make one sound e.g. ‘ch’). The sounds are taught in the following order:
Set 1-m, a, s, d, t, i, n, g, o, c, k, u, b, f, e, l, h, r, j, v, y, w, z, x, sh, th, ch, qu, ng, nk, ck.
Set 2- ay, ee, igh, ow, oo, oo (u), ar, or, air, ir, ou, oy
Set 3- ea, oi, a_e, i_e ,o_e ,u_e, aw, are, ur, er, ow, ai, oa, ew, ire, ear, ure, tion, tious/cious
Children begin their phonics journey as a whole class, and are constantly assessed to ensure they are retaining their sound knowledge. Children are grouped into smaller groups based on their phonic ability across FS2, towards the end of the first half term. We provide 1:1 tutoring sessions in an afternoon to those who we feel need extra practise to keep up, to ensure no one is left behind on their reading journey. There is a page in your child’s home reading diary that displays all set 1, 2 and 3 phonics sounds to practice reading and writing the sounds at home.
PE
PE lessons will begin on the week beginning 25.9.2023.
Children should arrive at school in their school uniform and bring sensible clothes and footwear for exercising to change into. Please ensure all items are labelled with your child’s name. Children will change back into their uniform after their PE lesson.
