year 3

Teacher : Mrs L Kendrick
   Teaching Assistant: Mrs R Bissell

A very warm welcome to Year 3 from all of our amazing children!

We have got lots of exciting learning opportunities and visits planned for this year. Below I have briefly listed our routines and procedures.

Our Topic this term is….

Into the Factory

(based around the wonderful world of Roald Dahl)

The topic ‘Into the Factory’ provides plenty of opportunities for reading and writing. This half term we will first have a focus on fictional writing, using our key text, ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’’ as inspiration to write: character and setting descriptions and stories. After our fantastic trip to Cadbury’s World, our Literacy work will have a non-fiction theme linked to writing: recounts, leaflets and we will even write our own script for our own TV advert.

While writing each genre we will have a specific SPaG focus throughout ensuring continuity of spelling and grammar rules.

We will also continue to follow the new Read Write Inc. spelling programme.

During this half term, we will continue to follow the Abacus scheme of work in order to ensure continuity and coverage.

This half term we will: add and subtract using number bonds, solve problems using place value, know multiplication facts for 2, 5, 10, 3 and 4 times tables, look at properties of 3D shapes, Compare and order 2 digit and 3 digit numbers,  subtract using place value and recall doubling and halving facts.

As Scientists, we will be investigating forces and magnets. The  children will work towards answering the Quest question, ‘can you make a tool that can move something on the floor far away from you?’.

As Artists, we will be developing our skills by studying the illustrator Quentin Blake and looking at our own personal likes and dislikes of his artwork. We will also be using different grades of pencil to show difference in tone and texture.

In ICT, we will be continuing to develop our programming and coding skills using the Espresso coding programme.

As Historians, we will be studying the Stone Age and make comparison between then and now.

Homework is regularly sent out every Friday to be handed in the following Wednesday.  Please hand in maths homework in the plastic school bag provided.

There is a list of common exception words that are ‘Nationally’ expected to be learnt throughout Year 3. We are sending this list home for your information and recommend practising reading and spelling a few each week, at your child’s own pace. I will be sending home a list of words from this list that your child can spell and ones they are struggling with.  In addition, in school we will also teach spelling patterns and rules which are sent home each Wednesday in your child's log and learn  book.

Year 3 and 4 Statutory Spellings word mat

In Year 3, we want to create a love of reading and children who are motivated to read because they choose books which they are interested in.

The more times your child reads at home, the further they will proceed along the reading race track, They can also earn certificates for the amount of times they read.

This year, your children will have two books to go home with, one will be a free choice book that your child has chosen independently from their colour band box and the other will be a reading scheme book .

Free choice

This book can be changed at any time by your child or an adult using our colour band boxes located in the reading area.

Reading scheme books

This book aims to challenge your child even further and will be changed every week by Mrs Bissell.

Please ensure you hand these in every week on Wednesdays.

Our PE days are Wednesday and Thursday. Please ensure your child has their full PE kit including, a white t-shirt and black shorts and trainers/pumps on both days. As the weather becomes cooler, children may also need hooded top to keep warm .
