Year 1B

year 1

Teacher: Mrs. Brock       Teaching Assistant: Mrs. Horton

Our Topic this Half Term is…

Let's Celebrate!

Our theme will be based on the traditional Hindu story 'Rama and the Demon King'.  As part of our work, we will compare good and bad characters in this story and other traditional tales.  This will help us to create our own heros and heroins.  We will learn about diffferent celebrations, including Bonfire Night, Diwali and Christmas.  We will find out about Guy Fawkes and his Gunpowder Plot in History.  As Scientists, we will learn about materials and their properties and use our new knowledge to test packaging gifts.  In Design technology we will develop mechanisms to create a moving Christmas card.

Reading regularly will develop a love of books and your child's skills as a reader.  We recommend reading at least 3 times each week.  Each day you indicate in their diary that your child has read, this means they race along our Reading Racetrack (as staff count home reads every Wednesday). 3 or more reads earn Team Points.

Weekly Maths homework will be sent home every Friday to be handed in on Wednesday.  This will often practise a skill that has been taught throughout the week.  On-line games will also be added to your child's page on Homework earns Team Points.

A spelling bookmark will be sent home.  The words on this are for your child to practise reading and spelling at home and in school.  There will be no spelling 'test', but children will be given new words when they are able to spell the bookmark words in their sentence writing.

Number facts are an important skill to keep practising throughout Year 1.  Our end of year target is for most children to be able to recall addition and subtraction facts for numbers upto 20 (such as 7+3=10, 10-3=7, 1+4=5, 5-4=1, 16+2=18).

Homework club is held every Thursday for children who have not had the opportunity to complete and hand in Maths homework or have not read at least twice at home.

Our PE days are Monday and Friday.  Children need a change of clothes to participate, including t-shirt and shorts, as well as trainers for outdoor PE during the Summer term.  Children with pierced ears need to have  earrings removed on PE days or plasters/micropore tape can be provided in their kit bag to cover earrings. Correct kit earns Team Points.
